When summer hits I think of one thing. Heat.
Where I’m from in the Washington DC area, summers can get hot and muggy.
But I love every bit of it!
So I couldn’t help but want to dive into creating a makeup this month dedicated to summer heat.
Fire Makeup
Have you ever found yourself staring into a flame of a candle or campfire? Fire is truly mesmerizing.
The colors can vary from reds and oranges to blues, purples, and even greens.
Let’s take a look at the effects we can create inside a fire makeup.
Flames
Look closely at the images on this page. Fire is shapeless and free. The flames aren’t uniform, and the movement of the lines draw your eyes upward.
Another key element of firey flames is the look of transparency. You can see other flames flickering behind them.
Burns
Another element of fire is a burn. I won’t post any real reference shots here (comment below if you’d like real-life reference shots included on the site), but I do recommend researching what a real burn looks like before attempting to create a fake burn.
Here are a few elements of real burns you can incorporate in creating fake burns:
- Blistering is common in burns.
- Creating a skin with sheen simulates healed burned skin. Think dried Elmer’s glue on the skin, that kind of sheen.
- Burns show what my family calls “the white meat” of the skin. It’s pale pink, inflamed skin with splotches of blood.
- Scabbing can be a little on the yellow side in addition to the traditional scab color.
Melting
For a less morbid look but probably just as gross there’s the melted skin makeup effect.
Creating the melted skin look can be achieved pretty easily with gelatin. Mehron makes a product called 3D Gel in several colors to achieve this look.
Drip the product and let it harden in place. Then, you can cover it with foundation, blood, charcoal powder, make it look like hot lava. Endless.

Tutorials
As always, I’ve gathered a few tutorials for looks you can try.
This first tutorial gives good guidance on creating an ombre effect for flames.
This tutorial comes from one of my favorite artists MadeYewLook. Learn how to get the lava under rock look.
The next two tutorials show several ways to create burns. So many great ideas here!
