Mermaid Characteristics

Mermaid/Mermen are half-human, half-fish, and should show some signs of being a fish in their features.

When creating a mermaid makeup we should include a few necessary elements:

• Scales. They are an important feature for any fish character. Mermaid scales traditionally have a shape similar to the picture to the right.
• Facial features. The human half is typically beautifully painted. However, the more sinister versions tend to resemble fish with sharp teeth and carefully placed scales.

• Iridescence. When you look closely at a fish you can see the scales have many colors that shift in the light. Mermaid makeup uses duo-chrome colors to achieve this effect.
• Hair. Take the beta fish pictured to the left as an example. Mermaid’s hair resembles the tail where it’s colorful, flowing, and wavy in appearance.
