How to: Whoville Makeup That's Uniquely You-Who

Whoville makeup holds a special place in the month of December. Everywhere in the makeupsphere are looks of the Grinch, Cindy Lou Who, and Whoville characters abound.

Inside NME Box this month was a challenge to create an original Whoville character.

We want to make a Whoville makeup that’s original, but still includes pieces of the Who characters we love.

Let’s dig into how to create a true to life Whoville makeup.

What…or Where…is Whoville?

Whoville is the place where many of the beloved author Dr. Seuss’ unique characters either live or are from.

Dr. Seuss’ stories have been transformed into film many times. Whoville makeup captures the whimsical artwork in Dr. Seuss’ books.

Who is from Whoville?

If you’ve ever read a Dr. Seuss book, you’ve seen the residents of Whoville. They look like little dolls

The Cat in the Hat was from Whoville, as well as his comrades Thing 1 and Thing 2.

The Grinch attempts to steal Christmas from the Who’s in Whoville, and he also originated from the town.

Horton, a happy go lucky elephant, carries around a tiny version of Whoville in the hilarious story Horton Hears a Who.

It’s a place filled with curved trees, wonky cars, and zany homes. The residents of Whoville are just as colorful as their abodes.

Tutorials

For this look, I wanted to find tutorials that included elements of true Whoville residents. There are three distinct characteristics of Who’s.

  1. A button nose
  2. Long eyelashes
  3. Decorative hair

This first video has it all. The artists use a prosthetic to create the button nose (NOTE: The prosthetic is like what came in this month’s NME Box, so if you’re a subscriber, you can see how to apply your prosthetic.).

I had a lot of fun watching that one.

The next tutorial is from one of my all-time favorite YouTube makeup artists Promise Phan. Here she does a Cindy Lou Who makeup tutorial.

Pay attention to how she creates a button nose without a prosthetic. And her tips on reshaping the face are priceless.

This last tutorial is another of Cindy Lou Who. In it we learn how to make the costume and added tips on creating a Who shaped nose.
